Logistics in the digital age of cyber threats

The logistics industry has always thrived on efficiency, scale, and reliability. But in today’s hyper-connected world, the very systems that enable growth and agility have opened new frontiers of risk. The modern supply chain doesn’t just move freight; it moves data. And that shift has expanded the attack surface in ways few could have imagined a decade ago.

Langham Logistics has experienced this evolution firsthand, offering transportation, logistics, cold storage, warehousing, and other supply chain services to Fortune 500 companies.

“We’ve grown from a single headquarters to seven different locations spanning hundreds of thousands of square feet,” explains Marc Cornejo, Langham’s IT Manager of Infrastructure and Security. “Each new site adds people, devices and access points. The attack surface just keeps getting bigger.”

A significant portion of Langham’s business today is in life sciences – from pharmaceutical shipments to cold storage. That raises the bar for security and compliance, since even a short disruption could ripple into healthcare supply chains.

Scaling logistics requires scaling cybersecurity

Langham’s evolution as a third-party logistics (3PL) provider mirrors what’s happening across the industry. Warehouses are bigger and more connected. Customers expect real-time data on shipments. Cloud adoption is the norm. And every new integration with a partner or customer system creates another point of vulnerability.

“Logistics is time-sensitive by nature,” notes John Huybers, Langham’s Director of IT. A cyber-incident doesn’t just delay shipments; it cascades across customers, vendors, and entire supply chains – causing reputational damage, missed SLAs, and lost revenue. “That reality has driven our top cybersecurity priority: building resilience across every part of our environment, from endpoints and firewalls to the cloud and IoT.”

Moving beyond the limits of legacy security

Langham already had the basics in place: firewalls, endpoint security, and other tools. But leaders recognized those weren’t enough in a world where threats evolve faster than signature-based defenses can keep up.

As a mid-sized company with an IT team managing a high volume of responsibilities, Langham didn’t have the luxury of a dedicated security operations center (SOC). That makes automation and AI not just helpful, but essential. It’s no longer enough to rely on traditional threat feeds. Attackers are moving too quickly.

“By 2020, despite years of strengthening our cybersecurity infrastructure, we recognized a critical gap: visibility,” reflects Huybers. “We couldn’t say with confidence whether we were being targeted – or worse, already compromised.”

That’s when Langham made its first investment in AI-driven cybersecurity.

AI is critical to securing the modern supply chain

Darktrace AI stands out because it learns what ‘normal’ looks like in Langham’s environment.

Using Darktrace was like turning the lights on in a dark room,” shared Cornejo.

That’s because Darktrace analyzes how Langham’s people, devices, and applications normally behave and automatically takes action when something deviates – without waiting for human intervention.

Today, Darktrace is providing Langham with 24/7 protection and autonomous investigation for 90% of all threats, on average. And Darktrace saved 264 analyst hours on investigations within a single month. “For an IT team at a fast-growing company like ours, this has been transformational,” said Huybers.

The two IT leaders agree that Darktrace has given them something they could never build themselves: 24/7 eyes on the network and the ability to act autonomously. When a pen tester ran simulated attacks, Darktrace picked them up instantly, blocked the traffic, and even triggered a call from Darktrace’s SOC alerting Langham to the events. “That kind of response is priceless,” said Cornejo.

Beyond stopping attacks in their tracks, Darktrace / Proactive Exposure Management™ equips IT with the ROI to assure executives their cybersecurity investment is supporting business continuity and customer trust.

Cybersecurity isn’t just about protecting data,” said Huybers, “It’s about protecting the business so it can keep delivering for customers. Darktrace makes that possible for a team our size.”

The only answer to AI threats is an AI defense

Langham has made AI a cornerstone of its cybersecurity strategy. For the IT team, the real value is peace of mind and confidence that their defenses can scale as the business grows, from new warehouse sites to expanded cloud workloads – without adding headcount.

Huybers stresses that, “It’s not about fear; it’s about readiness. Just as logistics thrives on anticipating and overcoming obstacles, cybersecurity has to do the same.” Cornejo added, “when people ask me if they should be worried about AI taking over, my answer is: don’t panic but take it seriously. Attacks are only going to get smarter. You need the right tools to keep pace.”

That’s the reality for today’s logistics providers – attackers are using AI to scale faster than humans ever could. “The only way to fight that is with AI on your side,” stresses Huybers.

I’m glad we invested in Darktrace early, because we’re ahead of the game.”

Turning cybersecurity into a logistics enabler

For other logistics providers navigating digital transformation, Huybers’ advice is simple: don’t wait. “Smaller businesses think they’re too small to be a target, but attackers don’t see it that way. Start with what you can but start now. The cost of waiting is too high.”

As the logistics industry adopts a more digital-first approach, the attack surface will only continue to expand – more partners, more devices, more data in motion. But Langham’s story shows that the right blend of technology and partnership can turn cybersecurity from a liability into a strength. At the end of the day, it’s not just about blocking threats. It’s about keeping supply chains moving, customers confident, and the business ready for whatever comes next.

“Cybersecurity is a lot like logistics,” concludes Cornejo. “The mission is to keep everything moving smoothly, even in the face of disruption.”
